History of Legal Medicine, personalities with remarkable contributions to the development of Legal Medicine: The first known exhumation in Bohemia was conducted in Melnik, on a dead body burried for about one week. Karel Rokytansky (1804-1878) was born in Hradec Kralove and studied in Prague. He developed a method of autopsy which is still one of the standard methods in use today - the Rokytansky technique - based on the "in situ" examination of the viscera. It is said that Rokytansky performed personally over 30.000 autopsies (an average of two per day for 45 years!).
